Computer Enclosures: Consider the Need

What is the secret to manufacturing uptime?

It’s safe to say, computers have come a long way since the early 1980’s. Electronics are ever-changing.  As the PC footprint shrinks, monitor sizes grow.  One trend that has not changed over the years is the need for NEMA-rated enclosures in manufacturing environments.

The secret to uptime is simply well-protected electronics contained in a computer enclosure. When you rely on computers to drive your manufacturing process, proper protection is critical.

How many times have unprotected electronics failed because of dust, grease or water in the air?

A manufacturer that utilizes a NEMA-rated computer enclosure will have a higher throughput, higher ROI and greater electronics lifetime than those who do not use any protection.

3 Problems a Computer Enclosure Eliminates

1.  Downtime

To state the obvious, you will experience downtime if a computer system fails because of exposure to dust, grease, moisture, etc. However, consider the amount of time required for procurement, installation and start-up to replace that system during a failure.  Many control panels and computer systems are custom and may not be readily available, thus adding more downtime.  Account for the needs of all parties involved – IT, engineering, maintenance and operators who come in contact with the computer system.

2.  Reduced Lifetime of Electronics

Selecting the right pc enclosure for your environment will help you maximize the lifetime of your electronics. The temperatures your PC should operate within are disclosed on the product specification sheet.  Overexposure to extremely high and low temperatures can damage integral components of the PC.  In addition, warranties will likely be in void.  To learn more about choosing the proper cooling and heating for your enclosure, reference “How to Determine Enclosure Thermal Management.”

3.  Security Gap

Choose an industrial enclosure that incorporates key locks. Prevent system operators from changing settings established by the IT or engineering departments.  Not to mention, the person who occasionally stores their lunch or even worse coffee inside the enclosure.  Liquids generally do not mix well with electronics!

So, how much money is incurred when a machine is down?

No company’s answer will be the same.

Consider all the options available for computer enclosures.   Weigh possibilities that include versatility, dependability and cost.  The upfront cost of implementing a quality pc enclosure may not be cheap. However, once you have chosen the correct enclosure, you will have the peace of mind knowing your investment will work during mission critical times 24/7.
