Maintaining the Seal on Computer Enclosures

A good bit of thought goes into selecting the correct computer enclosure for a harsh manufacturing floor.

557_Roxtec.jpgWhen looking for an enclosure that will withstand a wet, dirty, humid or wash down environment, have you considered how the cables will enter and exit the cabinet? Do not allow cable penetrations to be a weak link in the enclosure solution. If running conduit is not an option for cable entry, the next best solution is using a sealed gland that meets NEMA 12, NEMA 4, and NEMA 4X standards.

Cable glands are designed to withstand harsh environments and protect sensitive equipment from water, dust, dirt, particulates, or grease. Cable glands are module based and compressed together in a frame are available in a number of different configurations. Based on the configuration chosen, the module can save time and money, because you only have to install one framed cable gland entry module. Previously, you would have to drill out a hole for each and every cable. Now, it is easy to just install one module. Each module includes multiple layers that are simply peeled away (like an onion - see image) in order to adapt to different cable diameters. roxtec_gland_cable_entry_itsenclosures_icestation.jpgThe option exists to run a number of cables through one opening or individual cables through dedicated modules for a clean and organized installation. Lubrication is used to feed the cables and provide an excellent seal.

According to Roxtec’s website, cable glands have many benefits, “The ability to seal cables, pipes and hoses through one opening reduces lead times in projects and eliminates the need to redesign the routing at a later stage. The quicker a project can leave the factory, the shorter is the time-to-market… An even bigger benefit is radical reductions in warranty claims… [end users] have been able to achieve safer and more reliable installations of cables with connectors. This reduces their costs for repairs after delivery, due to component failure and improper routing.”

Inquire with the computer enclosure manufacturer if they are able to pre-install the sealed cable gland on the cabinet. If the gland is already punched and mounted on the enclosure, this will help eliminate installation time for the end user. When the enclosure arrives on site, the cables will simply need to be routed through the frame. The modules are then inserted around the cables - inside the frame - creating a reliable waterproof seal. Adjustments can also be made at a later time, making this a versatile solution.

Cable gland modules provide the ultimate in functionality and will properly protect vital electronics from dust, dirt, grease, and water from entering the inside of an enclosure. If not avoided, any of these harsh elements can have a negative effect!
