NEMA 4X Computer Enclosures in Food Processing

The food processing industry is quite fascinating, not to mention very important!

If you have ever watched the popular TV show “Unwrapped” on the Food Network, you were probably amazed at the amount of intricate processes involved in producing one product, like cookies or candy. Did you see the episode about producing fruit juice? The process is quite extensive and remarkable. From processing the fruit to mixing to bottling, the amount of effort that goes into making a simple drink like lemonade is more involved than one would think.

For the manufacturers, extreme sanitary conditions are always a top priority for food processing facilities. All food products created in a manufacturing environment must meet very strict safety and health regulations. If the regulations are not followed, the company can be fined or worst case scenario, shut down until their processes are improved.

With that being said, computers are the key to a successful operation and go hand in hand with the production of goods. Because of the meticulous cleaning and disinfection processes that are required, operators must conceal the computer, monitor and electronics in a NEMA 4X computer enclosure. However, harmful effects of a wet environment and routine wash downs will take a toll on the computer enclosure.

The food processing industry must take a closer look at the sanitation process during wash down. To meet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration standards, Food Code 2009 states that, “Materials that are used in the construction of utensils and food-contact surfaces of equipment may not allow the migration of deleterious substances or impart colors, odors, or tastes to food and under normal use conditions shall be: (A) Safe; (B) Durable, corrosion-resistant, and nonabsorbent; (C) Sufficient in weight and thickness to withstand repeated warewashing; (D) Finished to have a smooth, easily cleanable surface; and (E) Resistant to pitting, chipping, crazing, scratching, scoring, distortion, and decomposition.”

Corrosive Environment – Food processing industries are a challenging environment for electronics to exist. Although difficult, it is very easily managed with the correct NEMA 4X pc enclosure. Generally speaking, an enclosure that is constructed out of 304 stainless steel (or 316 stainless steel) is preferable in a food processing plant. The stainless steel construction will protect against hose directed water and greatly resists corrosion, which is caused by harsh cleaning abrasives. If the integrator fails to select the appropriate enclosure to protect against corrosion, the cabinet’s lifetime will be significantly reduced and end up costing the company more money over the course of time.

Cleanliness – It is imperative to choose an enclosure solution that will not harbor microbial contaminants during the sanitation process. The computer enclosure should feature a sloped top and clean edges to allow excessive water runoff. Sanitary leg kits are also a popular feature for ensuring water does not collect under the enclosure.

The bottom line: a computer system will not last long in a food processing environment if not properly protected in a NEMA 4X enclosure. Proper protection will keep the computer and other essential electronics operating flawlessly for many years to come. Always do your due diligence and research enclosure companies to see what options are available to meet your specific needs. Safety and sanitation are the utmost key for successful food preparation.
