When working in an industrial environment, versatile computers are a great tool to have on the manufacturing floor. Most computer systems deployed in a plant setting require the use of a keyboard and mouse. However, not all keyboards are created equal. Depending on the hazards (dust, dirt, grease, corrosive materials, and liquids) of the environment, an industrial keyboard is a great investment that will provide peace of mind that it will survive in a rugged environment. A keyboard must have the flexibility to withstand the overall harmful surroundings, because a failing keyboard is a failure in productivity.
A good deal of consideration is involved when determining what PC enclosure is the best choice for the environment. Specifying an industrial keyboard that will withstand wash down and dirty settings is just as important to the overall productivity.
The keyboard’s NEMA rating should meet or exceed the same NEMA rating as the industrial enclosure that houses the computer. A waterproof NEMA 4X rated keyboard eliminates the need for the operator to store it during heavy wash down. Therefore, valuable time will be saved during the cleaning process.
With the ability to withstand extreme temperatures, industrial keyboards are ideal in freezer and/or high heat treat locations.
Industrial keyboards are available in ”desktop” or “panel mount” support styles. A desktop keyboard will reside on a keyboard shelf or an integrated drawer in the cabinet. Panel mount keyboards are especially ideal for mounting directly to the work surface on the PC enclosure. It will save space and provide security that the keyboard will remain affixed to the enclosure.
Do not forget to specify a pointing device! There are a number of industrial mice available on the market. However, many industrial keyboards are available with an integrated pointing device. A hula point, touch pad or track ball can be included in the keyboard. Choosing a keyboard that includes the pointing device will ultimately save money, versus purchasing a separate NEMA rated keyboard and mouse.
Remember to check what keyboard and pointing device cable connection is preferred: USB, wireless or a PS/2 connection. With wireless, annoying cables are a thing of the past!
Always perform the necessary research before purchasing an industrial keyboard. Industrial keyboards combine the ruggedness that is necessary with the feel and action of a regular keyboard, often with standard keycap sizes and spacing.
