4 Digital Signage Trends in Manufacturing

Easily and efficiently sending out a memo or a change of procedure document to ALL employees - at a company - is no small task.

Keeping a large amount of factory employees up-to-date with pertinent information is very overwhelming. Printing out hundreds of pieces of paper, for employees, becomes quite expensive. Plus, most plant floor employees do not have a computer in front of them, so that eliminates email as an effective means of communication. More and more manufacturers are turning to fresh, digital signs to improve morale, increase overall safety, and assist in productivity.

4 Smart Reasons to Use Digital

Production Figures in Real Time

Large format LCDs that show real time production figures can motivate employees to drive production. The same screens can be used to display a sales target or company goal on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Jeroen Rademakers, head of PR and Communications at Netpresenter, discusses how this could be very beneficial, “Facilities can display outputs such as up-to-the-minute production information, actual production figures and comparisons against a target or a previous period, and motivate staff to meet their goals without keeping them from their work.” These goals are often not known by the factory staff. If the ‘benchmarks’ are displayed prominently, then the employees can understand them and make sure that they are met or exceeded. It makes the workday more interesting!

Safety Information

Safety is always a crucial priority in manufacturing. On a factory floor, there are a lot of moving parts. If employees are not properly informed about dangers, through the use of some type of digital signs, it can be very hazardous. Keeping up-to-date information visible to all employees is imperative. According to the Labor Law Center website, signage is vital, “Signs are the best method to continually remind employees of specific workplace policies or safety precautions that should be taken in their daily job duties. If properly posted and with an effective message, it’s a great tool to utilize as a constant reminder which may prevent workplace injury, employee disputes, and possibly OSHA fines in certain situations.” LCD digital signage is the perfect solution and great for lunchrooms/breakrooms or in the vicinity of time clocks.

Employee Acknowledgement

Employee recognition is nothing new in the workplace. It has been helping keep workers motivated for many years. However, if the recognition is broadcasted on a larger scale through animated or spirited digital signage, everyone will feel the need to work better and harder. Kim Harrison describes the importance of employee recognition in her blog piece, ‘Why Employee Recognition is So Important,’ “Praise and recognition are essential to an outstanding workplace. People want to be respected and valued for their contribution. Everyone feels the need to be recognized as an individual or member of a group and to feel a sense of achievement for work well done or even for a valiant effort. Everyone wants a ‘pat on the back’ to make them feel good.” Employee incentives (extra day off, gift cards, cash bonuses, etc.) or employee of the month programs help generate a positive work environment.

Competition

Everyone likes a good competition! Why not use games or tournaments to motivate employees to raise production figures? LCDs can be used as exciting scoreboards in the workplace. According to Jeroen Rademaker’s article, 4 Ways Digital Signage Can Make Factories Run Like Well-Oiled Machines, “By introducing game elements such as scoreboards into the workplace, a natural urge to win takes over, making workers want to perform even better. Digital signage screens help keep facility staff's eyes on the prize by displaying game announcements and scores throughout the plant.” Eye catching, dynamic digital signs can help employees stay motivated and perform at a higher level when something they want (or need) is on the line.

When deploying LCDs in a manufacturing setting, it is imperative to specify the correct LCD enclosure.  Manufacturing environments can be especially challenging on electronics – dust, dirt, water, grease, heat, etc. Thermal management should also be considered for the display enclosure. As always, it is best to perform the necessary homework to make sure that the perfect enclosure for the environment is selected. LCD enclosures can be extremely beneficial to employees, so it is best to choose a solution that will allow you to recognize the full lifetime of the electronics being protected.
