3 Reasons Why a Digital Wayfinding Kiosk is More Effective than Static

For wayfinding applications, the cost for digital will always be higher than a traditional static sign.

The comparison between the two forms of wayfinding is not apples to apples. A digital wayfinding kiosk is important for visitors/customers navigating an unknown space or building and digital makes this effort more dynamic and powerful. Therefore, there are many layers and questions to consider, for a digital project, that simply do not exist for static, including the LCD (size, orientation), mounting hardware, kiosk, media player, and a content management system. Digital is lively, accommodating, and, above all, cutting edge and modern. These benefits are not only for the everyday user, but for those maintaining the signage. Based on several reasons, companies that incorporate digital signage into its wayfinding will see a big return on investment.

The following are some examples as to why corporations are making the switch to eye-catching digital wayfinding:

Incorporate Real Time Updates

We live in a world driven by technology, where up-to-date information and news arrives almost instantaneously! Conveying a concise message is not always easy. The power of on-demand digital allows users to feel connected. Incorporating news tickers or social media platforms keep users interested and improves communication. When one thinks of a wayfinding  kiosk, they probably envision someone looking at a diagram or map to locate where they are going, but it can also be used to show weather reports, daily cafeteria menus, and meeting locations. The practical uses are endless.

Easy to Update

One of the biggest benefits that software companies tout is how easy digital signage can be updated – from mobile or desktop – with the swift click of a button! If the signage requires multiple changes throughout the week, daily, or even hourly, digital is a no brainer! Static or vinyl signs requiring constant updates/revisions can be time consuming, labor intensive, and take away from more productive tasks. Applications like hospitals, zoos, museums, theme parks, and corporate environments, that see many visitors a day, are prime candidates for wayfinding digital signage.

Maximize Real Estate

Rotating messaging allows programmers to maximize the amount of content that can be displayed on the LCD and it simply takes up less space. In addition, there is the ability for multiple users to access or view the information displayed on a touchscreen LCD enclosure at the same time. Use caution - just because the signage can present a good bit of data in a compact or limited space, it does not mean to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. The overall message is most important. It should be succinct, memorable, and influential!

It is highly unlikely that digital will ever completely replace static signage. Areas like emergency exits, restrooms, and other directional signs - that will most likely never change - should probably remain as a static sign. However, a healthy combination of digital and static will help shape the most beneficial wayfinding systems for the people using the signage.
