You've been tasked to launch a new digital signage project.
Not sure where to start?
There are a number of components that need to come together for a digital signage project to become successful. Figuring out where to start can be overwhelming. It is important to research the various products and services required to develop an effective campaign.
The challenge may be how to better market to a certain audience, how to keep workers better informed of company matters, or keep commuters abreast of when the next train will arrive at the station. The maze of hardware choices are abundant, but the following considerations will serve as a guide to making an informed decision.
6 Hardware Considerations For Launching A Successful Digital Signage Project
1. LCDs
LCDs always attract attention. Without a quality display broadcasting the message, you may as well throw in the towel! Although display technology changes at a dizzying pace, size will be a key concern when getting your message noticed. Consider the distance the viewer will be in relation to the LCD. IPS display substrate, LED backlighting, high bright vs. standard brightness are terms you should be familiar with to determine the best LCD for the project.
2. Media Players
Many LCDs allow for a single board computer (SBC) to be installed in a slot within the display. SBCs are highly advantageous because they provide a clean solution. A second alternative is a small form factor media player. There are a number of companies that manufacturer a media player specifically for digital signage applications. They are small, lightweight and can be nestled into the display mount. Another option is to remotely locate computer equipment. The computer is connected to the LCD via video extenders.
3. Display Mounts
There are a number of display mounts available, but choosing the correct mount in conjunction with your specific configuration is critical to a clean, seamless installation. Consider the display size, type of mount (wall, ceiling, post), and orientation (landscape vs. portrait). Mounts can provide additional space to house a media player and conceal cables.
4. Cabling
Everything from CAT5 to DVI to HDMI that connect the media players and displays need to be considered carefully. Inferior cabling, both in quality and installation, may cause issues and derail the project. Excess cabling can create a “rat’s nest” behind the mount or impede air circulation in a LCD enclosure solution. Cabling should be considered and specified early in the hardware selection process.
5. LCD Enclosures
Certain applications may dictate the need for additional protection to the LCD and related electronics. Most outdoor installations will require protection against weather, temperature fluctuations and vandalism. LCD enclosures are desirable in high traffic areas such as transportation terminals, stadiums and retail outlets. Although a LCD enclosure does add a measure of cost, when properly utilized will ensure operation, uptime and integrity to the overall solution. Engage a firm that specializes in manufacturing LCD enclosures and not display mounts or content solutions. Experience, warranty, service capability and reputation in the marketplace are key to selecting an enclosure solution that will work 24/7.
6. Installation
Once all the hardware has been determined, installation is no small task! Consider hiring a professional installation company with experience in digital signage. Construction, cabling, display configuring and the physical installation of equipment are services an installation company can provide. Choosing the right install crew will save time and money.
The hardware pieces are essential and should not be overlooked! Hardware comes in all shapes and sizes, but when properly selected, the pieces work in harmony to provide one common denominator: a message that reaches a specific audience.
