Digital signage can engage, communicate, direct, and, above all, educate patients. With new technological and innovative advances like all-in-one systems and integrated touch-screen displays, digital signage can be easily and securely added and supported throughout a care-facility. However, the overall protection of patients, visitors and employees is extremely vital. Many institutions source LCD enclosures for wayfinding, advertising, lobbies, hospital hallways, cafeterias, and waiting rooms. Dirty, germ-filled magazines in waiting rooms can be a thing of the past!

3 Predominant LCD Enclosure Trends in Healthcare

1. Anti-Ligature Enclosures

At mental healthcare institutions, safety is a top priority. Precisely why mental healthcare institutions require anti-ligature LCD enclosures that protect the patients from harming themselves (or others) in any way. The enclosures feature a sloped top and specialized hardware, making it extremely difficult to injure one’s self. An enclosure specialist can design the perfect enclosure, so that everyone at the institution is safe from injury.

In order to meet ADA requirements, recessed-in wall LCD enclosures may be used in healthcare. ADA compliance requires units not to protrude more than 4 inches off of the wall. It is ideal to find recessed enclosures that sit off the wall less than 3 inches. If recessing the enclosure/display into a wall, be sure that the enclosure installation solution includes a cooling fan to keep the display from overheating. If the LCD overheats, the content on the screen may shake or potentially power off. Obviously, a blank screen is a very ineffective screen.

3. Protective LCD Covers

If recessing the display into the wall is simply not a viable option, surface mount enclosures or protective covers can be used. Using a protective cover not only helps shield the LCD from costly vandalism, but it also allows the unit to be unique to the healthcare’s theme (custom colors, logo or sponsorship branding). Covers can be a simpler way to ‘go digital.’

From advertising to important health-related messages to hospital lunch menus, the possibilities for digital signage in the healthcare industry are unlimited. For example, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston used digital signage to inspire every person that entered their doors. Healthcare facilities can use digital for vaccine schedules, upcoming events, and news, weather and sports updates. All of these things have the benefit of freeing up additional staff time. Plus, in-room LCD enclosures can entertain patients for countless hours. Happy patients are always a good thing!
